Victorian

Named after Queen Victoria, the Victorian movement is a period set to encompass social class and the corruption of authority. Many Victorian pieces work around the struggle of the lower class trying to overcome their struggles and/or their oppressors. Victorian pieces also often emphasize on the gap between the rich and poor. Victorian novels often have a moral purpose as well.

Bleak House

Through the eyes of Esther Summerson, you see the Victorian world for what it is. Many, (like her own mother) are paranoid about the opinion of others, which ultimately is the cause of their unhappiness and despair. Many deny their love for one another simply because of social class standing. Poverty is emphasized as well through a boy named Jo. Jo states himself that the poor "dies everywhere" , bringing to the conclusion that many don't try to help the poor but tend to not acknowledge them and act like they're not there (XXXI).

Lesson to learn from Bleak House:

If all you see is fog in front of you, know that it wil clear eventually.
