Dr. Jekyll has an eye for things beyond rationality and chooses to chase the supernatural aspect of science. Jekyll’s repressed being is naturally the cause of death of Dr. Lanyon , for Lanyon cannot cope with the reality of human nature.

"With every day, and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and the intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to that truth, by whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two.”(X)

Dr. Jekyll's supernatural take on science not only made him two, but also reveals that we are all capable of anything and everything.

Lesson to learn from this novel:

Don't think anyone is above or below you, because you are just as capable of doing whatever they're doing, whether it's murder or owning a million dollar company.

Gothic literature is the outcome of writers challenging the

Enlightenment Era. Gothic literature is intended to contrast the Enlightenment Era's realistic perspective by using the supernatural to counter the natural aspect of life. Gothic pieces tend to create a sense of terror rather than horror. Gothic pieces challenge religion and morals.Their plots often revolve around mystery and romance. They often end with a strong moral message.

Gothic

The Picture of Dorian Gray

This is one of my favorite books. I found the idea of a changing portrait as fasinating (but then again, this is also known as a mirror so this is kinda awkward now). The portrait changes by it self, gradually becoming uglier and uglier as Dorian's evil nature takes over him. The supernatural aspect is Dorian's painting, because I mean, who else has a portrait that can change by itself? It challenges morals as well when Dorian lets his evil side give in to his many temptations (also he murders a guy for being honest). Oscar Wilde not only reveals that we have a choice on who we become but that "Each of us has heaven and hell in him" (XIII).

A lesson to learn from our handsome Dorian is that it's okay to dip into temptation every once and a little while, but expect to drown if you go in too far.

Dr. Jekyll

& Mr. Hyde

This is the movie adaption of my favorite musical, which also happens to based off a gothic novel called The String of Pearls
